Review Semantics
One review vocabulary, composed with the document register, Evidence State and Spectral State. Each of five questions keeps its own answer: what a passage is doing, where it came from, what the evidence supports, what judgment is asked or made, and what condition an architectural element is in.
Five questions, five owners
| Question | Answered by | It cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| What is this passage doing? | Document role: prose, quotation, callout, framing, synthesis | Whether it is true, accepted or in force |
| Where did it come from? | Basis: a keyed value, no color | Whether it is supported or accepted |
| What does the evidence support? | Evidence State: a dot | Acceptance, permission or maturity |
| What judgment is asked or made, about what, by whom, at which scope? | Review State: an outline | A new origin, new evidence or authority beyond the decision |
| What condition is this architectural element in? | Spectral State: a square | That every claim or use around the element is accepted |
Review State // the five roles
| Mark | Meaning | Value and relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Proposed | A candidate statement or change, awaiting a decision. It says nothing about whether the content is wrong or weakly supported. | The emphasis magenta, by reference: Spectral proposed's hue, not its value; a candidate on another axis |
| Correction requested | The same role, used only when someone has asked for existing words to change. It shares paint with Proposed, not event identity. | As above |
| Open question | A named matter held until someone answers it. | The emphasis cyan, by reference: bluer than Spectral held, an element deliberately held open on another axis. It shares a meaning with held and Evidence unresolved, a matter not yet settled, not their value. |
| Accepted | A recorded decision to adopt or to permit, naming what, who and the scope. A narrow scope is a whole decision, not a partial one. | Spectral earned, by reference: green |
| Declined | A recorded decision not to adopt or not to permit, naming what, who and the scope. It does not say the statement is false. | Spectral deflated, by reference: red |
| No decision recorded | Shown only where the absence matters. It is not a refusal or an acceptance, and not a hold: a hold is an open question. | The faintest neutral |
The other marks, basis and checks
- State
- Earned Structural Partial Deflated Held External Proposed
- Basis
- Evidence
- Supported Partially supported Unresolved Weakened Not yet testable
- Check
Rows and lists read in one order: state, basis, evidence, review. A row that opens a range, a whole list item's included, or stands as a prompt before a range leads with its review item, and its other items follow in that order. The same value on two axes is a correlation, not a synonym. Open question and Unresolved both name something not yet settled: Open question takes the emphasis cyan and Unresolved keeps its own value, and their geometry and their words say which axis is speaking.
Document roles stay as they are
A quotation: someone's words, on the violet rail.
A callout: the document's own point, on the magenta rail.
A level inside a level, on the neutral hierarchy rail.
None of these rails, nor the framing and synthesis panels, is a review or evidence state. A review mark opens a range over the content it concerns, a whole list item included, stands as a prompt naming its target before a range, or sits in the cell, note, list or document record that bounds it, and never repaints it.
The composition at its scopes
Paragraphs and their neighbors // one range per judgment
Each frame holds the product and at most two props; this paragraph carries no judgment and takes no rail.
Light and framing are separate choices: one frame may be lit for more than one season.
Two choices are not yet made:
- whether the catalog takes the square crop;
- whether the winter set is reused.
Until both are answered, each frame records its crop as undecided.
The next section turns to color, and this paragraph takes no rail either.
A basis or evidence row // after its block, no range
A statement recorded with its basis and its evidence, and no review judgment.
List items // each whole item its own range
- Proposed
Reprints keep the original paper stock.
- Accepted
Each frame is printed once at full size.
- Proofs reach the studio before the end of each month.
Open question
-
Each reprint is checked against the first proof, under the same light, by the same person, before the run is approved for the catalog.
Proposed - Open question
Damaged frames are reprinted from the original file.
Two questions about one table // a prompt before its range
| Frame | Reprint | Use |
|---|---|---|
| F-1 | marked | catalog cover |
| F-2 | not marked | inside spread |
| F-3 | marked | back page |
Several blocks // a range, opened by its row
A first paragraph the proposal changes.
A second paragraph inside the same proposal: the scope rail ends after it.
A paragraph already accepted, its own range beside the proposal's.
A list, and a quotation with its reading // one range each
- A first item.
- A second item.
- A third item.
Represented voice, on its own violet rail.
The sentence that reads the quotation, inside the same range.
Two statements in one cell // two ranges
| Statements | Position |
|---|---|
Accepted A first statement, accepted. Proposed A second statement, proposed. | P-4 // the fourth position |
One item, several questions // an annotation list
- Item
- State
- Structural
- Basis
- Evidence
- Partially supported
- Review
- Accepted
- Production use
- No decision recorded
The bounded trial is a whole decision with a narrow scope. It supplies no evidence and permits no production use.
A table cell // items on its first baseline
| Earlier position | Decision |
|---|---|
| P-1 // the first position | Declined |
| P-2 // the second position | Accepted |
| P-3 // the third position | Open question |
Words inside a block // a passage mark and its note
The frame keeps two props or fewer, and the key explains the marks.
Each print follows the paper plan agreed in round one, and a glossy stock is not used.
Not yet testable // its whole contract
Lavender-gray, a dashed rail, a hollow marker and the visible label. Inside the note, the note's rail is the one rail.
A question // a section with an Open question range
Question 2 // The market square
Should the market square stay in the study?
Leave it out this round, and keep its counts for the next.
Comparisons
One value, two axes
- Green
- Earned Supported Accepted
- Red
- Deflated Declined
A shared value is not a shared meaning. The square, the dot and the outline, the key and the words say which question each mark answers.
One callout, proposed and then accepted
Signs of use are welcome; damage is not.
Signs of use are welcome; damage is not.
The rail at the content edge is the callout's and does not change with the decision. The scope rail outside it, and the mark that leads it, do.
The same word on two axes
- State
- Proposed
- Review
- Proposed
The word and the magenta hue are shared, not the value: Spectral's proposed is its own theme-calibrated magenta, review's is the emphasis magenta. The key and the geometry, a square and an outline, say which question each answers.
Mark, chip or action
thesis
The review mark and the chip share one box, the bordered label: the same padding, corner and edge. Its small corner keeps an inert mark from looking like a control beside a compact action. The mark differs from the chip in its fainter label words, its review vocabulary and its place, leading the range it opens, a whole list item included (whose scope rail sits outside the content edge), or a prompt before a range, or sitting in the cell, note, list or document record that bounds its scope, not in its color: a Proposed mark and a thesis chip share the emphasis magenta. The chip names why a unit is emphasized and heads a panel.
